This week we had our first PK meeting of the spring semester! We added 12 new mentees to the group over our last recruiting period. To start off the meeting, we had pizza and mingled with the new and old PK mentees and started the meeting off with a game called “2 Truths and a Lie”, allowing us to learn a little bit about everyone and have a little fun. We also allowed them to make community rules to follow during the semester allowing everyone to sign them as a commitment to these rules. This week’s PK lesson was on “Respect”. We did an activity that asked the mentees various questions about respect like what is it and how do you feel when you are respected. The goal of the activity allowed them to think about what respect means to them and find new ways to respect others. To end the meeting we shared a quote from Kobe Bryant to honor him in his passing: “ Haters are a good problem to have. Nobody hates the good ones. They hate the great ones.”

This week in PK we continued our discussion from last week on Respect. To open up the meeting we played a game called A- Z vocabulary where the mentees had to find a word for each letter in the alphabet. We also played a word race game to see how many words the mentees could make out of the letters in Project Knowledge in 3 minutes in 2 teams. After our icebreakers, we had our “circle talk” and went around the circle and asked each mentee how they displayed respect this week. To further apply the things we learned in the Respect lesson from last week, the mentees were split into teams of 5 and were tasked with making skits on Respect. The five skits were on respect in different areas: relationships, school, family, friends, and teachers. The mentees came up with great skits, many of which displayed disrespect followed by an act of respect to correct the disrespect that was presented. This also allowed them to see how they can turn a situation they feel they are being disrespected in and show respect to diffuse the situation, allowing them to feel better about themselves and avoid problems.

Our first PK session back in action! We had a GREAT turn out & lots of interaction between the mentors and the mentees. We started off with an ice breaker followed by a check in so we could get to know each other more and actively see how every person was doing. We then discussed the rules of Project Knowledge & the proper Zoom call etiquette. The meeting was successful and everyone did enjoy it!

Today's PK meeting went well as we discussed utilization of an agenda and calendar. The mentees were able to discuss the purpose and importance of both. We reviewed how to properly use an agenda for classwork and homework. We lastly went over the effects of procrastination and the processes to use time more effectively.

Today we talked about Time Management and the incorporation of "jot down lists". We showed everyone how they could utilize these jot down lists in their everyday activities. We then explained the difference between the jot down list, a calendar, and a planner. After showing everyone how to create a calendar, we explained how they could stick to  them (the most important part). We want to teach the students how to be organized! With so much use of technology, we decided to end the day with E-genda's. Today's youth are always on their phones/devices so we made sure to incorporate a way to organized through those electronic avenues.

This week we talked about stress. We reviewed what is was, the different types and how to cope with stress. We all get stressed out but the most important part is how we handle it. We taught the mentees how to handle that stress and overall, how not to let it control them.
